Melissa Engel is a Clinical Psychology PhD student at Emory University. She received her BA in Psychology from Emory and her MA in Developmental Psychology from the University of Minnesota. A self-proclaimed “autoimmune warrior,” Melissa has severe allergies to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish, in addition to asthma, type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and a complex connective tissue disease. Her graduate research focuses on the intersections of children’s physical and mental health, with a particular interest on stress, inflammation, and resilience in the context of pediatric chronic illnesses. Melissa has published in several academic journals and presented her research at conferences across the country. She has been involved with the food allergy community for as long as she can remember and even spoke with (then senator) Barack Obama about food allergy legislation at the FAAN Kids’ Congress on Capitol Hill! Additionally, Melissa is a 200-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and is currently writing her first book.
