Following the difficult decision to end FARE’s Food Allergy Heroes Walk in November 2018, our volunteer and community programs are evolving. Here we share some of the ways that FARE volunteers are making a difference. Thank you to everyone who helps make the world a safer, more welcoming place for all those managing food allergies.
During Food Allergy Awareness Week 2019, Ariel Dietz presented FARE’s Be a PAL: Protect A Life program to her child’s kindergarten class, helping our youngest allies learn how they can be a friend to those with food allergies. "The script with questions that FARE provided was perfect, and I followed along exactly. Extremely turnkey. The kids were excited and thoughtful with their replies. One piece of feedback from the teachers was that this would have been perfect for the beginning of the school year to promote good food habits early on. I will be doing this again next school year, probably in the fall, to do just that!"
Eleven-year-old Adel Schneider is a fundraising dynamo. With the help of her mom, Kara, Adel organizes and promotes events that raise awareness of food allergy in her Appleton, WI, community while raising funds to support FARE’s mission and initiatives. This month Adel and Kara are joining with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers baseball team to support FARE. Each $10 donated to FARE through the Team Delly webpage will enter the donor in a drawing for four seats behind center plate and the opportunity to throw the first pitch at either of two peanut-free Timber Rattlers games, to be held Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21. Volunteer-driven Team FARE fundraisers like Adel’s come in all shapes and sizes.
Organized by Emily Homan, Erica Hanson and Rose Sterling, the 2019 Duluth Hometown Heroes Community Walk for Food Allergy took place on June 1. Emily writes, "We felt honored to have the opportunity to bring the Hometown Heroes Walk to Duluth for the second year in a row! It was quite literally the 'Perfect Duluth Day' weather-wise, and brought food allergy families together to meet, share, and see that they are not in this alone."
