Washing my Dad’s car, chasing my sister around the car to splash her, and hanging out with extended family are what come to mind when I think of Father’s Day. My name is Serina Menon, I’m 16 years old, and I’m a rising junior in Houston, Texas.
Father’s Day has always been very important to our family. Breakfast usually includes my older sister and me making pancakes and sausage for the entire family. I’m allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, chickpeas and lentils, so we ensure that the breakfast doesn’t contain any of those ingredients. Afterwards, we wash his car to the best of our ability, trying not to get sidetracked by spraying each other with water.
For as long as I can remember, my extended family, including my uncles and grandfather, gather at my aunt’s house to celebrate. Lunch is simple and tasty with hot dogs, barbecue chicken and roasted vegetables. I’m incredibly thankful that my family has always been so accommodating and understanding of my allergies.
Father’s Day is always around the same date as my parents’ anniversary, so we end the day with cake to celebrate. Last year, I made a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting using an online recipe. Baking is one of my passions and has allowed me to explore egg-free desserts that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to eat.
Although my food allergies have presented their fair share of hardships, embracing them has allowed me to grow as a person and flourish. And, throughout it all, my dad has been right by my side, supporting me. He's taught me so many lessons regarding my allergies and general life. I’ve learned that although my food allergies pose limitations, they do not define me and what I am able to accomplish. The path forward may not be the traditional route, but it's filled with endless possibilities.
To all of the fathers out there, happy Father’s Day!
