Navigating Food Allergies in College: Choosing an Allergy-Friendly School and Thriving in a New Environment

New environments and schools can be terrifying (especially college!). An endless stream of questions might go through a person’s head when faced with this search process and decision, but even more so for someone with food allergies. The lengthy process of finding an accommodating institution and adjusting to a new learning and living environment can feel daunting, and it’s normal to not know where to begin!

However, it is always worth it to do the appropriate research, find resources (like this one), reach out to others going through similar experiences and take the needed steps to ensure your safety. So, how can you be sure that you select a college that is a good fit for you and provides you with a safe environment? While you can never be 100% sure, here are some tips, tricks, and firsthand experiences from those who have gone through the process to help you find and thrive in a new environment!

Starting at a new school is always scary—even more so for those of us with food allergies. Hopefully, these tips and tricks can help you fact-find, explore, and visit prospective colleges, and better prepare you for taking the needed steps once you arrive on campus!

College is an exciting time full of opportunities, future friends and personal growth. Though it may seem incredibly scary to make this transition, especially with allergies, it is doable! With careful research and planning, it is possible to have a safe, fun and enriching college experience.
